Benefits of cold pressed coconut oil
Coconut oil is primarily used while cooking food in Kerala, Southern India. Known for its anti-viral, antibacterial quality and anti-inflammatory benefits coconut oil can be in cold-pressed or refined form. Cold pressed coconut oil has flavor and retains anti-oxidants. Thus, should be preferred over refined coconut oil. Whenever you cook food its best to carefully choose the type of oil as it is the main ingredient. Lately, many people are debating about the kind of oils that are best for our health. Many discussions and research have been conducted to understand, which oil is best for our health.
Most of us are aware of the benefits of coconut oil and for many years coconut oil has been preferred.
So, let us look at the benefits of cold-pressed coconut oil:
Antioxidant benefits:
Cold-pressed oil is made without any heat. Coconut meat is removed and pressed. On the other hand, refined coconut oil is made by drying coconut meat. Coconut meat is bleached, deodorized and heated in a hydraulic press before its heated and filtered.
As with all foods that are processed, when its heated antioxidant content is reduced. Therefore cold-pressed oil will have a higher level of antioxidants than refined coconut oil.
Flavors:
Cold-pressed oil retains the natural and pure taste of coconut oil. If you are using coconut oil for baking then it’s just the perfect choice. When you choose cold-pressed coconut oil while cooking it gives a nutty and delicious flavor that coconut has.
While refined coconut oil is made after a lot of processing, thus the original flavor of coconut is compromised. Refined coconut oil will have a neutral flavor where you won’t be able to get the smell and flavor of coconut.
Additives:
Cold-pressed coconut oil is good if you are looking to avoid additives. When oil gets refined, additives are used to remove impurities to arrive at a clean final product. Cold-pressed coconut oil isn’t refined, it’s free from additives.
Healthier option:
Cold-pressed coconut oil has some nutrients like medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs) or triglycerides. They have three types of immunity-boosting and disease-fighting acids called lauric, capric, caprylic.
These all have antimicrobial and antibacterial qualities that protect your skin from harmful elements in the environment.
Kill harmful microorganisms:
50% of fatty acids in coconut are 12-carbon lauric acid. After digesting lauric acid, it forms a substance called monolaurin. Lauric acid and monolaurin kill harmful pathogens like fungi and viruses.
These substances help in killing bacteria Staphylococcus aureus.
Thus, cold-pressed coconut oil should be preferred to refined coconut oil. It has no additives and chemicals. Thus, making it healthy and natural.
