What can bee propolis do for your health?
Health is the machine on which you carry your dreams. We all know that if our bodies and mind are not healthy, we cannot fulfill our dreams. One aspect of maintaining good health is eating healthy.
So, we decided to talk about bee propolis today as it has many health benefits. Propolis is “bee glue” that holds the hive together.
Bee propolis is a brown sticky substance that bees make from a mixture of beeswax, resins, sap, their saliva, and botanical compounds. This is all about bee propolis. But, what does the word mean? Let us divide the word into pro – which in Greek means “in defense of” and polis means “city” which literally means “in defense of the city.”
Now that we have a considerable idea about bee propolis let us discuss its health benefits.
Health benefits of bee propolis:
-
Fights inflammation:
Brazilian propolis can block the serine protein kinase also known as PAK-1. What does this imply? In brief, it means that propolis contains compounds like flavonoids, caffeic acid, and naringenin that help to reduce the inflammation response. Thus, it fights chronic inflammation.
-
Protects our skin:
It’s been some time that I have got hooked to using natural things easily available in order to make my skin look better. I’ve been using honey for quite some time. Lately, I’ve added propolis to my skincare regimen. And it speeds up the healing of minor cuts and burns. It also helps in taking care of our skin in the following manner.
Swelling (inflammation) and sores inside the mouth (oral mucositis):
Most research shows that rinsing the mouth with a propolis mouth rinse helps heal sores caused by cancer drugs or dentures.
Warts:
It stops warts. It gives better results than echinacea treatment or placebo. Research suggests that propolis is a much better and safer immunomodulating therapy for warts.
A painful disease transmitted by mosquitos (dengue fever):
Research shows that taking propolis helps people with dengue fever leave the hospital faster. It is not known if propolis helps with symptoms of dengue fever.
Eczema and Psoriasis:
Psoriasis can cause havoc in your life. It is irritable to your skin. The anti-inflammatory effects of propolis can make it effective in fighting skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis to bring relief.
Diabetes:
Research shows that taking it may slightly improve blood sugar control in people with diabetes. But it doesn’t seem to affect insulin levels or improve insulin resistance.
Cold sores and ulcers:
This substance which is resinous may help to battle cold sores and ulcers. Herpes simplex virus is extremely common so you have to be careful about it. HSV-1 virus causes cold sores or fever blisters in the mouth. It can also result in genital herpes. HSV-2 is a more common cause.
Propolis battles both as per research. It also reduces pain and duration of cold sores as well as fever blisters.
-
Boosting the immune system:
It treats cold and flu. If you keep it handy that can save you from so much trouble. Research proves that people suffering from acute cold symptoms improve on the first day of treatment with propolis. So, its effectiveness in treating and getting a quicker relief from cold and flu.
In fact, propolis also lowers the possibility of you getting cold and flu thus it boosts your immune system. Keep propolis and elderberry syrup handy during the winter season.
A serious gum infection (periodontitis):
Early research shows that deeply rinsing the gums with a propolis extract solution decreases the bleeding of gums in people with periodontitis. Taking it by mouth helps to prevent loose teeth in people with this condition. But taking it by mouth doesn’t seem to help with plaque or bleeding.
-
Allergies:
When you are allergic to bee products its best to avoid propolis. But if you are not allergic to bee products it helps in calming allergies and avoids them. Research has shown that propolis reduced histamine release from mast cells in rats. This makes it a natural antihistamine thus, the first choice of defense against seasonal allergies.
Dental Benefits:
In dentistry, It has been used for the prevention of dental caries and periodontal diseases, as an interim transport medium for avulsed teeth, and in endodontics, orthodontics and periodontics. Objective To highlight the role of propolis in dentistry. MethodsA PubMed search was made using the keywords propolis, bee glue, antimicrobial, dental and herbs without any limits on the date of publication. No specific inclusion or exclusion criteria were applied as the purpose of the review was to make it as comprehensive as possible.
DiscussionThe role of propolis is discussed in various branches of dentistry, including preventive dentistry, dental traumatology, endodontics, periodontology, orthodontics, and oral oncology. Conclusion Although most research published in the dental literature on propolis is based on in-vitro studies or animal studies, extrapolating the results of these present studies to clinical practice may be too early as these results may not be necessarily replicated in human trials. In the future, propolis may find a definitive role in one or more applications in dentistry; however, clinical trials are necessary to isolate the individual components responsible for its beneficial effects and to study them.
-
Battles cancer:
We still need to research more on this aspect of propolis. Some studies show that vital bee products can benefit from prostate and colon cancer, among others. Some studies have shown that propolis causes cancer cells to die by necrosis, which means that it stops the blood supply to the cell and caused only the harmful cells to die without causing harm to healthy cells.
Athlete’s foot (Tinea pedis):
Early research shows that applying Brazilian green propolis to the skin decreases itching, peeling, and redness in students with an athlete’s foot.
